Why Garages and Tight Lots Need a Different Truck
Parking structures are built for passenger cars, with ceilings that can be as low as seven feet and ramps that bend in sharp circles. A flatbed with its deck and headache rack needs far more height and turning room than that. A wheel-lift truck, by contrast, hooks the front or rear wheels and lifts them a few inches, leaving the car short enough to roll out through a low opening.
Apartment complexes and older neighborhoods have their own limits: narrow drive aisles, parked cars on both sides, speed humps and gate arms. The driver walks the route before committing to it.
How We Extract a Vehicle From a Tight Space
- You describe the space. Ceiling height if posted, ramp type, gate width, and the level where the car is parked.
- We choose the gear. A compact wheel-lift for most cars, with skates or dollies when the wheels cannot turn.
- The driver scouts the exit path. Turn radius, overhead pipes and sprinkler heads, and anything else that might catch the truck.
- We lift and roll slowly. The car is moved in short steps with a spotter if needed, so nothing scrapes a column or wall.
- We reposition or load. Out in the open, the car can be set down for a jump or tire change, or transferred to a flatbed for the longer haul.
Situations Where We Get Calls
- A car stranded on the upper level of a parking deck with a dead battery
- An apartment tenant whose vehicle is blocked in by a broken-down car
- A car in an underground garage that will not start and needs to come out
- A pickup truck with a lift kit that will not clear the exit gate, or the reverse: a lowered car that cannot take a ramp
- A vehicle in a residential driveway with a steep drop at the curb
Some of these are better solved by a jump start or a tire change on the spot, and if so dispatch will say so. We do not tow a car that only needs a boost. Our jump start and flat tire pages explain those options.
Property Managers and Landlords
If you manage a building or a lot and need a reliable truck for disabled-vehicle removals, call dispatch and we can talk through how pickups should be authorized. This page covers breakdowns and moves a driver asks for. For anything involving private-property removals, call and talk it through with dispatch first.
What It Costs

Tell us the clearance if it is posted. It helps us bring the right truck the first time.

Details That Speed Up a Garage Tow
- Posted clearance height, or the type of structure
- The level, row or stall where the car sits
- Whether the wheels turn and the car shifts into neutral
- The make and model, and whether it is lowered or lifted
- A contact person on site if there is a gate code
“A truck that is too tall never gets to the car. We would rather ask about the ceiling twice than send a rollback and waste forty minutes.”
