Why Illinois Winters Kill Batteries
A battery makes electricity through a chemical reaction, and cold slows that reaction. At the same time, a cold engine is stiffer, the oil is thicker and the starter needs more current. A battery that is marginal in October can fail on the first subzero morning in January. Short trips make it worse because the alternator never gets time to recharge what the starter took.
Heat does damage too. A summer of high temperatures under the hood can wear a battery out, and the failure only shows up when the weather turns cold. If your battery is four or five years old, treat a first no-start as a warning.
What Happens on a Jump Start Call
- Diagnosis by ear. A fast clicking sound suggests a weak battery. A single click or no sound can point to a starter, a loose cable or a fully dead battery.
- Safe connection. The driver attaches the jump pack or cables in the right order, with the cars not touching, and checks the polarity.
- Start and idle. Once the engine fires we let it run to build charge, and we check that dash lights return to normal.
- Charging system check. If we have a meter handy, we check that the alternator is producing the voltage it should.
- Next step. If the engine keeps stalling, the problem is not the battery alone, and we talk about a tow to the shop.
Gas, Diesel and Hybrid Notes
- Gasoline cars and SUVs usually need a straightforward 12V boost.
- Diesel pickups often have two batteries and need more current, which is why we carry equipment sized for them.
- Hybrids and EVs also have a 12V battery that runs the computers. A jump can wake them up, but follow the manual for the correct jump points, and tell dispatch what you drive.
- Cars with start-stop systems may need the battery tested after a jump because the system is picky about charge level.
After the Jump: Do Not Just Drive Away
A jump gets the engine running. It does not fix the reason the battery went flat. Drive for at least twenty to thirty minutes so the alternator can recharge, and do not turn the engine off at the next stop. Better yet, have the battery and charging system tested. Our repair bay handles electrical diagnostics during shop hours, and you can call ahead to ask about battery replacement for your vehicle. If it fails again, it needs real attention.
What It Costs
| Item | How we price it |
|---|---|
| Jump start service call | Flat rate, quoted on the call |
| Mileage charge in town | None for in-town calls |
| Electrical check at the shop | Quoted at the counter |
| Tow if the jump fails | Quoted before the truck is hooked up |
We tell you the flat price before the van starts rolling.
Details verified October 2026. Final numbers are always confirmed by phone before a truck rolls.
Tell Dispatch Before We Arrive
- What happens when you turn the key: clicks, silence or a slow crank
- Whether the headlights and dash lights come on bright or dim
- Your vehicle type, including diesel, hybrid or EV
- Where the car is parked and whether we can reach the battery
- Whether the car has start-stop or a battery in the trunk or under a seat
“Most jump calls are routine. The ones that matter are the repeats, and when we see the same car twice in a week we tell the driver it is time for a battery, not another boost.”
